Gana Rank and Advancement
Gana had a unique method of gaining Rank. They had three areas in which they could advance, depending on the Ways they choose to follow. Only the oldest and wisest excelled in all three Ways, and these were called Toyandou.
The Gana had three divisions of Rank. Each Gana started out as Rank One in all three Ways. The Rank levels were Acolyte (Rank One), Scholar (Rank Two) and Elder (Rank Three). The three Ways can be compared to Garou Auspices: the Way of Knowledge (Theurge), the Way of Honor (Philodox) and the Way of Wrath (Ahroun). The Gana's title was determined by the rank she held in each of the Ways. The title for the Way of Knowledge was Siddhidatta, the title for the Way of Honor was Indhlovu, and the title for the Way of Wrath was Nilagiri. A Gana rose separately in each rank depending on the Renown she achieved. So a Gana warrior, for example, might have been an Acolyte Siddhidatta, an Indhlovu Scholar and a Nilagiri Elder. The Gana gained access to Gifts based on the ranks she achieved; see Attainments for more on this.
Rank was a very personal thing, reflecting the character's genuine mystic enlightenment more than the political status of other Shifters. A were-elephant achieved rank separately from other Gana; once he had achieved enough enlightenment in his Way, his mind opened to learning more powerful Gifts from spirits and other Gana. Gana Renown was completely seperate from the Renown of other shifting breeds and the neighboring Emerald Court, but was recognized by other Shifters and spirits (if not understood or fully accepted).
Gana saw themselves as part of a worldwide body of individuals called the Muladhara; this term translated roughly as "the all-foundation". This term is given to the worldwide collective of Gana everywhere, and reflects their perception of themselves as aspects and maintainers of a greater whole. Each Way reflects a part of the Muladhara symbolic "incarnation": these are Mind, Body, Spirit and Soul.
The Three Ways
The Way of Honor: Indhlovu were given the important task of interacting with other Breeds in a diplomatic capacity, or manipulating them, based on the wisdom gained by the Siddhidattas. While the Siddhidattas had grant ideas how this Breed or another could be swayed, the Indhlovu were usually the ones that actually put the theory into practice. These Gana best knew how to influence others, and thus were very important to the Gana cause. As those who followed the Way of Honor had the most to do with outsiders among the were-elephants, they were the first to be culled by their enemies. They were the Body of the Muladhara, giving actuality to the Mind and Spirit.
Those who walked the path of Honor sprout additional trunks in their Vinayakas and Gajahraja forms, representing their increased manipulation of others, and ultimately of fate itself. Indhlovu gain +1 bonus to Strength per extra trunk for purposes of lifting objects or throwing opponents with their trunks.
The Way of Knowledge: Those Gana who focused on this Way, called Siddhidattas, were thoughtful and contemplative. Their role was to retain the laws and purposes of the other Breeds. They held the greatest station among the three Ways, for they provided direction and purpose to the other two. Many Siddhidattas did little but delegate, discuss and debate with one another, and handing down mission statements to Indhlovu and Nilagiri. They were considered the Mind of the Muladhara, granting the Body and Spirit perspective, direction and purpose.
As he gains Rank, a Siddhidattas were-elephant grows additional eyes on his forehead to reflect his greater understanding. He attains an additional eye for every Rank he achieved (so a Scholar would have had two additional eyes.) These eyes exist in all forms but Homid and Tembo. Each extra eye adds a die to vision-based Perception rolls, and to those Perception rolls involving supernatural understanding (such as Gifts).
The Way of Wrath: Sometimes getting others to do what they should is a tough job, and a Gana's subjects were often... difficult. This is where the Nilagiri come in, willing and able to use force where pursuasion fails. These Gana were terrible to behold in battle. This Way wasn't the most esteemed among the were-elephants, but it was necessary. They were also the defenders of their kind, and their failure during the War of Rage was a bitter one. The Nilagiri were the Spirit of the Muladhara, and prevailed where the Body's finesse and Mind's understanding did not.

A Gana that follows the Way of Wrath displays massive tusks, and even sprouts a second pair as she advances in Rank. At Acolyte level, the tusks lengthen, doing an additional die of damage (Strength +2, aggravated). Scholars sprouted another pair of tusks, making it harder for opponents to dodge tusk attacks (the difficulty for a Tusk Gore is lowered to 5). At the Elder level, the second pair or tusks lengthen, and the damage increased by +1 (for a total of Strength +3.) These super-tusks only manifest in Vinayakas and Ganharaja forms.
Toyandou
Many Gana started on the daunting path toward gaining full mastery of all the Ways, but very few ever achieved that level of enlightenment. Those that did were Toyandou, the demigods of the Elephant Breed. The Toyandou were the Soul of the Muladhara, giving purpose and presence to the Mind, Body and Spirit, in this and all worlds.
As the Bodhisattvas of the Gana, the Toyandou gained great power and wisdom from such an exalted state. These qualities were the stuff of legend, even among the Gana, though the specifics of the Toyandou state are lost forever. Access to Toyandou Gifts, as well as Fourth and Fifth Level Breed Gifts, is a given, as well as the resistance to frenzy and social bonuses claimed by the most exalted Shifters. Some of the other benefits these eldest Elephants were believed to gain were immortality, enormous control over their minds and bodies, fate manipulation, and additional attributes such as additional eyes and trunks.
