Fu Chun Gifts and Rites
Gifts
As well as sharing Gifts common to all hengeyokai, the Fu Chun have their own Gifts. The Fu Gou and Fu Shi-zi have the same tribal totem and are of the same tribe, and there are no separate Gifts for the castes. (This means Fu Shi-zi don't get to pick from the Bastet general list, while the auspice list of the Garou is similarly off-limits.) These Gifts reflect the tribe's spiritual ties to their totem Ki-rin and a mix of ancestral tribal lore, offering them a diverse array of powers.
Characters choose one Gift from the following list; one Gift from breed (homid, Garou metis, Bastet metis, lupus or feline); and one Gift from either the auspice or communal hengeyokai list.
Catfeet (Level One): As the Level Three Lupus Gift. This is taught by a cat-spirit. Fu Gou are as adept with this Gift as their lion brethren, owing to an affinity for a similar Gift their Stargazer ancestors possessed.
Persuasion (Level One): As the Level One Homid Gift. This Gift is taught by a snake-spirit.
Righteous Voice (Level One): The hengeyokai lets loose a deep, ear-shattering cry: Fu Gou howl, while Fu Shi-zi roar. The Gift must be used in animal or near-animal form. This effect is great for intimidating or stunning opponents. This Gift is taught by a war-spirit.
System: The player spends a point of Rage and rolls Stamina + Intimidation (difficulty 7). For a number of turns equal to the successes rolled, all those unfriendly to the Child of Ki-rin suffer a +1 difficulty penalty to all die rolls from fear. While the howl or roar can be heard one mile distant per success, the Gift's effects only extend to a hundred feet or so. Others may come to investigate the commotion, so invoking this Gift isn't wise the Shifter wishes to maintain a low profile.
Chi Surge (Level Two): The Fu Chun concentrates and draws upon her chi reserves, increasing her physical power or force of personality. This is a refined version of a Simba tribal Gift, and its secrets have been kept alive by the Fu Shi-zi.
System: The Child of Ki-rin concentrates for one turn as the player rolls Gnosis, difficulty 7. Each success is a dot that can be distributed as the player chooses among the following Attributes: Strength, Stamina, Charisma and Appearance; however, no more than two dots may be added to any single Attribute. The Attribute bonuses last for one scene, and the Fu Chun can't use this Gift consecutively (i.e., no stacking bonuses). Those of who are at least Gold status (Rank 4) need not concentrate for a turn to gain the benefits of Ki Surge, and can channel their chi instantly.
Healing Touch (Level Two): As the Level One Theurge Gift: Mother's Touch, except that it can be used to heal one's self; a glowing, golden glow surrounds the user's hands when the Healing Touch is invoked. This Gift is taught by a spirit servant of Ki-rin.
Horn of Ki-rin (Level Two): The Shifter may sprout a single backwards-slanting horn from her head in Crinos or near-animal form. Its purifying properties make it a great weapon against the minions of the Centipede, though its configuration makes it somewhat difficult to hit with. This Gift is taught by a spirit servant of Ki-rin.
System: The player rolls Stamina + Primal Urge (difficulty 7) and spends a point of Gnosis to sprout the horn. It is difficulty 7 to hit with, and causes Strength + 2 aggravated damage. In addition, if the horn strikes a Wyrm creature (such as a Bane or Kuei-jin), the player may roll temporary Gnosis (difficulty 7) if any damage gets through soak. Every success removes three power from a Bane, or one point of Chi from a Kuei-jin.
Inspire Awe: (Level Three): As the Level Three Child of Gaia Gift: Dazzle, except the roll is Charisma + Intimidation. This Gift is taught by a rooster-spirit.
Scales of Ki-rin (Level Three): The Ki-rin sprouts thick golden scales all over her body in Crinos or near-animal form. Scales disappear if removed or knocked off (and this hurts!), so it's not a good way to get rich. This Gift is taught by a spirit servant of Ki-rin.
System: The player rolls Stamina + Enigmas (difficulty 8). Every success translates to an additional soak die against all attacks, including silver. In addition, these extra dice also add to Appearance die pools.
Sky Travel (Level Three): As the Uktena Gift: Spirit of the Bird, except there is no difficulty increase for complex actions, and the maximum flying speed is five times the hengeyokai's running speed. This Gift is taught by a falcon-spirit or air elemental.
Bestow Joss (Level Four): Ki-rin is said to bring luck to the righteous. With a touch and an encouraging word, the hengeyokai with this Gift can offer good fortune, or joss, to someone worthy of it. Such luck can only be put to righteous ends, and it leaves if used frivolously or selfishly. The character may even call upon the Gift's benefits personally, though this is considered crass except in times of emergency. This Gift is learned from a spirit servant of Ki-rin.
System: Each use of Bestow Joss may only affect one subject at a time, which the character must touch as she activates the Gift. The Child of Ki-rin spends a point of Gnosis and rolls Charisma + Enigmas (difficulty 7, or when using the Gift 8 on herself). The subject gains a number of automatic successes equal to the number of successes on the Gift's roll. These are spent like points of Willpower, according to the player's wishes; however, any number of "joss points" may be spent at a time. Once spent, or one this good magic is put to a bad end, these auto-successes disappear.
It's the Storyteller's discretion what constitutes good uses of joss, though helping allies, fighting the Wyrm, resisting frenzy, and preventing injury to oneself or another would qualify. Gambling, lying, fighting a fellow Gaian Shifter, and assassinations are all probably bad acts and will strip one's luck. Successive uses of Bestow Joss don't stack, as fate can only be coaxed so much. As long as a subject is under the influence from a previous use of this Gift (or any similar luck effect, like the Solicitous Mantle of Red Jade), she can't benefit from any further use of the Gift.
Sanctity of Mind (Level Four): As the Level Four Silver Fang Gift: Mindblock. This Gift is taught by an enigmas-spirit.
Taking the Yoke (Level Four): Ki-rin purifies and fights evil, but he is also a healer. The Fu Chun can relieve others of damage, disease or physical maladies by taking the malady upon herself. Selfless use of this Gift does much to increase the tribe's esteem in the eyes of their fellow hengeyokai. It is taught by a spirit servant of Ki-rin or an ancestor-spirit.
System: The Fu Chun touches the individual she wishes to heal, and the player spends a Gnosis point and rolls Stamina + Medicine at difficulty equal to the subject's Rage or 6, whichever is higher. Success indicates that the subject's malady is taken from him, and is absorbed by the Fu Chun. (The hengeyokai can take all or only some of the condition, if she wishes.) Health level damage taken from others converts one-for-one to the Fu Chun's health track, and is healed at the standard rate (one level per turn for lethal and bashing damage, one level per day for aggravated damage). Diseases will likely be purged from the Fu Chun's body by her regenerative system in a few hours, though particularly severe diseases like cancer or AIDS may require longer to heal or may even be incurable (Storyteller's discretion).
Permanent debilities like battle scars, metis deformities and blindness may also be taken by the Fu Chun, but cannot be cured by her body. However, as soon as the Fu Chun stops maintaining the Gift the malady returns to its original bearer -- though even a brief respite from a lifelong deformity or disability is often appreciated. A Fu Chun can even choose to take a condition upon herself permanently, though it would be a kind soul indeed who made such a sacrifice. (Note that supernatural afflictions or Mandates of Heaven, such as the damned nature of the Kuei-jin, the Curse of Caine or Paradox Flaws, cannot be healed or absorbed by Taking the Yoke.)
Aura of the Sun (Level Five): As the Level Five Child of Gaia Gift: Halo of the Sun. This Gift is taught by a spirit servant of Helios.
Jade Mantle (Level Five): The hengeyokai can hold a piece of jade in her hand and actually transform her body into living jade of that type! This grants the Fu Chun great physical power, as well as mystical abilities based on the type of jade she becomes. This Gift is taught by the greatest of jade-spirits.
System: The Fu Chun holds a piece of jade (of any color) in her hand and imbues it with a point of Gnosis. She then rolls Stamina + Rituals, difficulty 8, to draw forth the awakened energies of the jade and gain its physical and mystical properties; the jade actually merges with the Fu Chun's body, so a piece of jade can only be used once. The type of jade the hengeyokai becomes depends on the type she merged with. All types of jade grant the following benefits, in addition to the other properties listed below: +1 Strength, Stamina +1, can use Stamina to soak all damage (including silver), and one additional health level. However, movement speed is halved and the hengeyokai can't swim. The jade form can be maintained for one scene, and of course, only one Jade Mantle form may be taken at a time.
♦ The Cleansing Mantle of Green Jade: As the Righteous Mantle of Devil-Killing Blue Jade, above.
♦ The Devil-Killing Mantle of Blue Jade: The hengeyokai cannot be touched by, or come into physical contact with, unclean spirits. This includes Banes, Spectres and other demons, whether they are manifested or in the Umbra (this means the Fu Chun can't attack them, as well). Spirits' attacks slide right off, and they suffer great pain; they must make a Willpower roll, difficulty 9, or have all dice pools halved for a number of turns equal to the Fu Chun's current Gnosis. The hengeyokai is still vulnerable to attacks by bakemono and Kuei-jin, and she can attack them in turn; they must make a Willpower roll (difficulty 8) when they come into contact with the Fu Chun or suffer the same penalties as do evil spirits from the excruciating pain.
The Earthen Mantle of Gray Jade: All physical attacks cause an additional die of aggravated damage to Shen, and he user may ignore one health level of damage from the mystical powers of Shen -- this includes Gifts, Sphere Magic, Disciplines, Arcanoi and other such powers (damage from purely physical attacks, such as claws, is unaffected).
♦ The Negating Mantle of Black Jade: All physical attacks cause an additional die of aggravated damage to Shen; when attacking other hengeyokai, the victim loses one point of Gnosis if any damage gets through the soak.
♦ The Solicitous Mantle of Red Jade: The hengeyokai can ignore a single 1 on any roll she makes, and she gains a number of countermagic dice against the magic of the ch'in ta equal to half her current Gnosis (rounded down).
♦ The Impervious Mantle of White Jade: The hengeyokai gains two additional soak dice against all attacks by Shen, and her physical attacks cause double damage to spirits.
♦ The Reverend Mantle of Yellow Jade: as the Earthen Mantle of Excellent Gray Jade, above.
Ki-rin Form (Level Five): The Fu Chun can temporarily leave behind his feline or lupine heritage and transform into an actual Ki-rin, the mythical dragon-horse servants of the Ki-rin Incarna. This Gift is taught by Ki-rin himself, and the Fu Chun must travel to Ki-rin's palace in Heaven and request an audience to beseech this blessing.
System: To assume Ki-rin form, the Fu Chun merely need spend a point of Gnosis and make a transformation roll (Stamina + Primal Urge roll, difficulty 7). While in this form, the Fu Chun gains the benefits of the Gifts: Horn of Ki-rin, Scales of Ki-rin and Sky Travel (even if the hengeyokai doesn't know these Gifts). Attribute adjustments are as follows: Strength +4, Dexterity +2, Stamina +4, Appearance +2. The Ki-rin form has a Strength hoof attack (aggravated damage), and a -2 adjustment to Perception difficulties. In addition, due to the spiritual nature of Ki-rin, Gnosis difficulties to enter the Mirror Lands are reduced by 1 (minimum difficulty 2). The Ki-rin form can't manipulate items, as it's quadrupedal and has hooves. The Ki-rin form doesn't cause the Delirium, but does cause an awe effect in mortals and Wyrm creatures similar to that created by the Gift: Inspire Awe.
Rites
Though ritualistic and traditional, the Fu Chun have few unique rites, and instead learn and use the ones common to the Beast Courts. An exception is the Rite of Claiming, which allows Fu Shi-zi to establish Den-Realms as do Bastet; as they're Garou, Fu Gou can't learn this rite. Fu Chun prefer Rites of Accord and Mysticism.
