Blood Lotus Blossoms
New Discipline Arts
Standard arts (powers) may be learned in leiu of the standard arts, or in addition to them if the character is willing to spend the exp to learn that Discipline level again. Arts of Accord (combination powers) require that the character has the requisite Discipline levels and spend the exp cost to learn the art.
Blood Form (Blood Shintai ●●●●●)
A more extreme application of the art Flow Like Blood, the Cathayan literally transforms herself into an ambulatory, vaguely humanoid being of viscous, moving blood. In this form, the vampire has the consistency of honey, and is largely impervious to harm.
System: The vampire's player spends two Yin Chi and one Yang Chi. It takes one turn to assume the blood form. The vampire's Social Attributes drop to zero, but she suffers no reduction to her Physical Attributes. She may dodge as with Flow Like Blood (●●●). In addition, she may add her Blood Shintai rating to her soak pool against physical attacks, as fists, knives and claws pass through her semi-liquid body; however, this additional soak doesn't apply to energy or area attacks. The Cathayan may stretch her limbs and body as per Long Neck (Flesh Shintai ●) at will, and may activate the Blood Shintai arts: Blood Atemi (●), Bloodlash (●●●●) or Blood Blade (●●●●● ●) without having to spend Chi if she succeeds on a Stamina roll (difficulty 6); the effects of these arts may be maintained for one turn per success. Finally, the vampire may ooze through grates and cracks; normally this takes but a turn, though flowing through smaller openings or screens may take two or more turns to accomplish.
Flame Shield (Ghost-Flame Shintai ●●●)
The Cathayan creates a nimbus of non-burning spirit flame about himself, which deflects normal and magical fire and redirects it into the surrounding dragon lines.
System: The player spends one point each of the character's Willpower, Yin Chi and Yang Chi. For the rest of the scene, the Wan Kuei may soak fire damage with his Ghost Flame Shintai rating (including that created by Ghost-Flame Shintai), and Yang rolls to avoid Wave Soul are at -1 difficulty if triggered by fire. If the character has Iron Mountain or other art that provides fire protection, the protection stacks (though reduced soak difficulties from Iron Mountain don't apply to the Flame Shield soak dice).
Presence of the Calm Mind
Obligation ●●, Yin Prana ●●, 16 exp.
A wise manipulator makes certain her subjects are receptive before discussing important business. The Kuei-jin can impose a state of Yin Mind upon those around her (and herself, if need be), calming fiery passions and soothing wounded egos.
While only highly perceptive subjects are likely to realize there is magical influence, those who do may well resent being forced to "play nice"... even if the vampire "means well". Victims may become angry with the manipulator if her ruse is discovered, automatically negating the benefit of the art. Thus, use of Presence of the Calm Mind on other Kuei-jin has been forbidden by those courts who know of the trick, though no doubt some vampires attempt to get away with it. One ranking Bone Flower Mandarin is known to haven fallen out of favor with his court after it was discovered he was relied on Presence of the Calm Mind to achieve his position of prominence, and was assassinated by unknown parties a few weeks after his fall from grace.
System: The vampire spends a point of Yin Chi while the player rolls Hun + Yin, with the difficulty based on the general mood of those present:
Difficulty 5: A sedate group (members of a Buddhist temple, opium den)
Difficulty 6: Average group (a public assembly, street crowd)
Difficulty 7: An irate, scared or nervous group (peasants hiding from Communist soldiers)
Difficulty 8: A group antagonistic toward the vampire (a Face of the Gods addressing Resplendent Cranes)
Difficulty 9: An angry mob (the family of a murdered girl, a pack of insulted Hakken)
Difficulty 10: Blood enemy (an enraged akuma, a mother that witnessed you devouring her child)
Presence of the Calm Mind may not be used on those already fighting, and doesn't affect those of higher Dharma (or lower effective generation) than the user of the art. If the roll is successful, a feeling of peace and calm settles on the immediate area for the duration of the scene. Mortals won't realize they're being manipulated, and even Shen aren't likely to realize the influence (though a successful Perception + Occult roll, difficulty 9, might tell them something weird is going on). Passionate arguments give way to reasoned discussion, and even hot-tempered subjects find it difficult to get angry. All Yin roll difficulties to avoid Fire Soul are reduced by 2. In addition, those subject to Presence of the Calm Mind are favorably disposed toward the Kuei-jin using this art; all Social roll difficulties except Discipline effects using Social Attributes are made at -1 difficulty for the scene.
Restore the Balance (Equilibrium ●●●●● ●)
A Cathayan with this art may remove a willing subject from a state of Chi imbalance, though the subject must sacrifice spiritual strength; however, those who are desperate to be restored to balance are often willing to endure this spiritual lobotomy. While not as powerful as Adjust the True Balance, Equilibrium practitioners needn't be Bodhisattvas to learn Restore the Balance, and thus it's much easier to find those capable of using this art on one's behalf.
System: The Kuei-jin with this art must touch the recipient (who must be either Yang-imbalanced or Yin-imbalanced), then the player rolls Charisma + [Virtue] and if spend a variable amount of Chi. The Virtue that is rolled must be of the opposing type to the subject's dominant Virtue, and the difficulty equals 3 + the subject's dominant Virtue (maximum difficulty 9); the vampire using Restore the Balance must spend a number of Chi equal to the rating of the subject's dominant Virtue. For example, for a Mandarin to reduce a Ch'ing Shih's Yin of 6, his player must roll Charisma + Yang against a difficulty of 9 (3 + subject's Yin), and spend 6 Yang Chi. Success on this roll lowers the subject's dominant Virtue by one, if the required Chi is spent; multiple uses of Restore the Balance may be necessary to restore an excessively imbalanced vampire.
The lost Virtue point is just that, lost; it is not transformed into a point in the opposing Virtue type or transferred in any way. Just erase that dot from the sheet. In addition, the subject of Restore the Balance must spend double the normal amount of experience points the first time she wishes to raise a Chi Virtue, due to the subtle spiritual damage the art causes. However, after the character raises a Virtue, this experience penalty is waived from then on.
