The Floating Ritual Option
However, rituals have one major flaw: they require vast investments of time and resources, as well as the efforts of multiple ritualists. They can't be performed on the spot, which reduced the utility of rituals that might have uses on the battlefield or in social situations. Rather than ignore the casting time and treat rituals like evocations (which would undermine the concept of rituals and make them too powerful), one possible solution is for ritualists to "hold" ritual effects to be released later in the form of floating rituals, allowing them to perform rituals and then release their effects at some opportune time later.
The Ankida must designate the recipient of the floating ritual, which may be either she or one of the Mudu; Khauiki lack the essential connection to the ritual's energies to contain such an effect. However, the Ankida and all the Mudu performing the ritual must know one syllable of the fallen's True Name to "tie" the ritual's effects to her, while the Khauiki can make do with the Celestial Name; not many fallen will give out even a syllable of their True Names to even trusted allies, and thus floating rituals are only rarely performed. However, it should be noted that the same syllable can be used for multiple rituals. (One common custom for this is for the subject of the floating ritual to exchange True Name syllables with the Ankida and Mudu, as a sign of good faith.)
The ritual is performed normally (with the standard rolls, difficulties and Faith costs), but ten minutes is tacked onto the normal time, as the ritualists carefully weave the threads into the pattern of the recipient. The ritual's performance is voluntarily interrupted right at the end, just before the final incantations are uttered and the ritual takes effect. At this time, all the ritualists must make a Faith roll (or Willpower, for mortal Khauiki) against a difficulty of 7 to gather the ritual's energies and weave them into the subject's soul, and the successes are pooled. If the number of successes garnered fail to match or exceed the level of the highest-level evocation used in the ritual, plus the number of additional Lores used, the effects of the ritual will dissipate unless the gathered ritualists complete it right then -- which may not be advisable, such as when performing Storm's Fury or Plague of Boils. (For example, a ritual that uses Lore of the Realms 4, Lore of Paths 2 and Lore of the Fundament 1 requires at least six successes on the ritualists' Faith/Willpower rolls.) If all these requirements are met, the ritual is now stored in the recipient, to be released at a later time. If the ritual is a tormented effect, the floating ritual's recipient gains a point of temporary Torment.
A floating ritual can be held by a demon for a number of hours equal to the number of total successes attained by the ritualists when weaving the ritual into her; by the end of this time, the ritual's energies will have dissipated to no effect. However, the effect is bound into the character's very essence by means of her True and Celestial names; thus, some of the demon's potential energy is tied up in perpetuating and containing those powerful celestial energies on the verge of release. The game effect is that the character's acting Faith rating (not temporary points) is reduced by one dot while the ritual is held. For all purposes, including evocations and assuming apocalyptic form, the character uses the lower rating. Also, during this time, if any evocation roll botches, the Celestial loses control over the contained energies and the ritual's effect is spontaneously released (probably far sooner than she would have it). Finally, the character can't sleep while maintaining a floating ritual, and may find it difficult to concentrate on certain tasks, granting a +1 difficulty penalty to certain rolls involving Mental Attributes (Storyteller's call).
At any time, a character may release the floating ritual by speaking the last few syllables of the ritual, and making the casting roll listed under the ritual; this requires one turn of concentration, during which the character may not perform evocations or use Faith in any other way. All Faith costs and Torment gains associated with casting the ritual must be observed. After the floating ritual is released, it takes effect and the demon's Faith rating returns to normal.
A character can never be the recipient of more than one floating ritual; the competing energies would cancel each other violently inside the demon, and likely leave her with permanent spiritual damage.
